You're the Pundit: Why hasn't there been a new iOS 5 beta?

When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is iOS 5.

We last saw an iOS beta release back in August. That's well over a month ago, and as any developer can tell you, it was far from fully baked. Normally Apple ships updates every week or two, but not this time.

So why this long delay. Why has there been over a month without a new beta introduced? After all, before iOS 5 ships, developers need access to the Gold Master, so they can start the App Store submission process.

It normally takes Apple a couple of weeks to work through the huge influx once they give the green light to allow devs to submit with a new SDK.

You tell us. Place your vote in this poll and then join in the comments with all your predictions.

The Internet Isn?t Just Another TV Pipe

TVs shotAs everyone knows, Facebook schooled the web last week, and expanded its territorial ambitions to the world of media.  Launching with partners in print, music, and video, Facebook?s latest update pushes toward a world where consumption?s default has been switched to sharing, and social discovery sits not on the periphery of the media experience, but permeates it. Zuckerberg presents this as a new model for media industries, one where you ?discover so many songs (or movies, or articles) that you end up buying even more content than you ever would have otherwise.? Indeed, bringing users into the media discovery process is an important step. Ultimately though, it?s just a beginning, for it touches only the marketing component of the traditional model (consumers still passively consume content; they just get to tell people about it now).  The media revolution that?s coming will go further, fundamentally restructuring the relationship between media producers and consumers and often blurring the line between the two. In my industry, television, everyone is scrambling to figure out the impact of Internet distribution.  How will it impact broadcast, for first-run airs and repeats?  What?s online?s relation to DVR and VOD?  How do its CPMs and sellout rates compare to other channels?   Questions like these, however, fail to capture the full opportunity inherent in the new medium.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Nokia's S40 replacement OS may defend against Android feature phones

Reports have surfaced about a new Linux-based mobile platform that Nokia is developing for feature phones. The platform, called Meltemi, will run on low-cost devices aimed largely at developing markets—regions where Nokia has historically been strong.

The new operating system might help Nokia remain competitive at the low end as Android starts to scale down and become a serious contender in the high-volume feature phone space. Although Android isn't quite there yet, its proven versatility and appeal to mobile carriers suggest that it will eventually be adapted to run on even cheaper hardware.
